Was ist Coolsculpting?
Coolsculpting is a patented revolutionary non-invasive cooling technology developed by Zeltiq. It has the ability to remove specific localized fat in areas of the body such as the waist or love handles, back and abdomen that have been shown to be stubbornly responsive to exercise and diet. Coolsculpting delivers a controlled and targeted cooling effect to targeted areas of the body. Using the method of fat freezing known as cryolipolysis, this method freezes fat cells in the target area of the body and the fat cells are removed from the body through a natural metabolic process. Coolsculpting is a non-invasive and non-surgical alternative to liposuction and tummy tuck.
What are the results after a Coolsculpting fat freezing treatment?
The Coolsculpting by Zeltiq procedure can reduce the fat layer by 20 to 40%. Scientific tests have shown an average reduction of 20%. If the patient's treatment plan calls for an additional procedure to remove love handles or back fat, this is performed after two to four months, depending on the doctor's recommendation. An additional 20% reduction can be experienced, resulting in an overall fat loss of 40%. The final losses can be more or less depending on the case.
What Happens During the Coolsculpting Process?
Patient and doctor first select the area(s) to be treated. For example, if your goal is to reduce your love handles, the doctor will position the system on your side. The device then pulls the bulge between two cooling plates upwards. The feel is a firm tug and tug - enough pull to ensure tissue is cooled most efficiently.
Can the patient return to normal activities after the procedure?
Yes. The Coolsculpting procedure is completely non-invasive, allowing the patient to return to normal activities immediately. Some patients experience redness, easy bruising, tingling or numbness in the treated area, but this is temporary.
When does the patient see results?
Patients can begin to see changes as early as three weeks after their treatment and will experience the most dramatic results after two months. But the body is still flushing out fat cells and will continue to do so for up to four months.
Are the weight loss results permanent?
During the coolsculpting procedure, the treated fat cells are removed. As long as the patient maintains their weight through diet and exercise, long-term results should remain stable.
How does coolsculpting work?
Because the body's fat cells are vulnerable to extremely low temperatures, Coolsculpting technology cools the fat above freezing by placing gel pads and applying a special applicator to the target area. The fat in the body then transitions from a liquid to a solid state, leading to apoptosis, a process that causes the body's fat cells to shrink.
How does Coolsculpting remove fat cells?
A few weeks after performing the Coolsculpting® procedure, the treated fat cells are safely and gradually removed from the body through a natural metabolic process. It is so safe and discomfort free that the patient does not realize that the fat removal process is in effect. As the fat cells naturally leave the body, there will be a noticeable shrinkage in the circumference of the treated area.
What happens to fat cells when they die? How does the body process them??
The dead fat cells are broken down and digested by the immune cells in the body. The fats released from the dead fat cells are processed by the liver, which is an organ in the body that performs this very function.
How is coolsculpting performed?
The Coolsculpting® procedure is performed in the doctor's office and is usually overseen by a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist. The target area to be treated is marked and covered with gel pads to protect the skin throughout the process. The treated area is gently drawn between the two cooling pads using a special vacuum applicator. The procedure does not require pain medication or administration of anesthesia.
How long has coolsculpting been around? How many people have been treated so far?
Coolsculpting has been available in Canada, Europe and regions of Asia since October 2009, with clinical trials beginning in May 2006. The device has been used to perform more than 140,000 treatments worldwide.
Who is eligible for Coolsculpting? Is there a minimum age?
Coolsculpting is not a weight loss solution or a replacement for invasive methods such as liposuction. The ideal coolsculpting candidate maintains a healthy weight but struggles with bulges that simply cannot be removed through exercise or diet. You are aiming for a selective reduction of certain areas of fat, but are not considering surgical intervention. Doctors decide on a case-by-case basis whether a patient is a candidate for coolsculpting. Coolsculpting has only been studied in healthy adults over the age of 18, and only a doctor can determine if a patient is a candidate for the Coolsculpting® procedure.
What can people expect in terms of fat loss - what is the average result?
In all Coolsculpting cases, patients experience undeniable fat reduction in the treated area. However, the visible results may vary depending on the patient's initial fat deposits in the treated area. How does coolsculpting feel?
As the fat cells in the body are being cooled, the patient will feel a cold sensation on the treated area, which should gradually disappear as the treated area becomes numb. The patient experiences a similar sensation as when an ice pack is placed on the skin. When the plates take effect in the first few minutes, the patient feels an intense cold sensation. That will go away soon. The patient is comfortably seated or lying down during the one to three hour procedure. Many people spend this time reading, working on their laptop, or even napping.
How long does each Coolsculpting treatment last?
Each treatment can last one to two hours or longer depending on the size of the area to be treated. During the consultation, the doctor will discuss how long the procedure will take and how much time should be allowed for your visit to the office.
How many treatments are necessary to achieve the desired results?
Fat cells are killed with each treatment. Each patient/case is different, so it is recommended to schedule a follow-up appointment with the doctor after the procedure to assess cosmetic improvement and consider additional coolsculpting to achieve greater fat reduction.
What is the recovery process after you have performed the Coolsculpting® procedure?
There is little to no downtime after coolsculpting. Patients can resume normal activities, including work and exercise, on the same day as their Coolsculpting® procedure. Although uncommon, a small percentage of patients may experience pain related to their treatment. The pain will subside over time.
Can the treatment cause nerve damage or permanent deafness?
Coolsculpting is very selective in killing fat while sparing other structures. Clinical studies show that the Coolsculpting® procedure does not cause nerve damage or permanent deafness. A small number of people may experience transient symptoms that may include skin tenderness, stinging and/or pain. These symptoms are temporary and will subside over time. If needed, an oral medication or topical anesthetic may be prescribed.
If you kill the fat in one area, what happens to the fat cells in other areas? Are they moving to compensate? If there are fat deposits all over the body and you target just that one area, what happens to the rest?
Once the fat cells have been killed by coolsculpting, those cells are eliminated. Fat will never return to the same spot that was treated. So there is no risk of fat migrating from other areas to the treated area to compensate.
Can coolsculpting cause dents or uneven skin tone?
Coolsculpting has not been found in clinical research to cause a change in skin tone or color and does not cause wrinkles or dimpling.
Is there a higher risk of discoloration or other skin problems for each skin type? For example different ethnic groups?
The doctor's experience with the product shows that it is safe for all skin types.
